As word spread on February 28–March 1, 2026 that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli military operation, Iranians’ responses revealed deep and complex feelings — from jubilant celebration and relief to grief, confusion and fear about what comes next.
1. Spontaneous Street Celebrations and Joy
Across multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, Karaj, Shiraz, Isfahan and more, videos verified by news agencies showed people cheering, honking car horns, playing loud music, dancing and even setting off fireworks late into the night. Many residents leaned out of windows, gathered on rooftops and erupted into applause on hearing the news.
One resident in Tehran described hearing whistles and honks filling the air, while others shared posts on social media expressing simultaneous joy and disbelief. Many waved or referenced images of protesters killed in recent anti-government movements — a poignant symbol of both celebration and remembered suffering.
Even before official confirmation, the scenes of jubilation began late on Saturday night, with crowds embracing the moment as a historic shift after decades of repression.
2. Emotional Turmoil and Disbelief
While celebrations were widespread, many Iranians expressed shock or scepticism, saying the news felt unreal until they saw verified evidence. Some social media users shared mixed emotions — crying, laughing and screaming all at once, describing the moment as overwhelming after years of hardship under the regime.
Others lamented that his death may have come suddenly, feeling that decades of suffering would not be undone instantly, and expressed regret for lives lost and years of repression even amid the moment’s release.
3. Mourning and Support Among Hardliners
Not all reactions were celebratory. In cities like Mashhad and parts of Tehran, groups of Iranians reportedly gathered to mourn the loss of Khamenei, chanting slogans and sobbing openly as they responded to state media’s announcement of his death as a “martyr”.
State broadcasters showed emotional scenes as anchors and commentators grappled with the gravity of the news, and official mourning rituals began as Iran declared 40 days of national mourning and a week of public holidays
4. Fear, Panic and Uncertainty
Amid celebrations, many Iranians also felt deep fear and anxiety about the future. Widespread strikes triggered panic in cities, with people rushing to stock up on essentials, withdraw money and consider leaving urban areas amid fears of further conflict or reprisals. Roads were blocked, gasoline stations were crowded, and schools were shut down amid the chaos.
Some Iranians worried that foreign military intervention — even if it toppled the regime’s leader — could lead to worse devastation in their homeland, drawing parallels to other countries in the region that suffered prolonged instability.
5. Voices of Opposition and Future Aspirations
The reaction was not limited to spontaneous street scenes. Opposition figures in exile, including former royalty and activists, used the moment to urge Iranians to unite and work toward a stable and free future
Exiled Iranian figure Reza Pahlavi, for example, called on his compatriots to prepare for a transition away from the theocratic system, warning that any attempt by the regime’s loyalists to install a successor would lack legitimacy.
Across social platforms and diaspora communities, many Iranians outside Iran also cheered the news and voiced hopes for regime change, while urging caution and support for ordinary citizens inside the country.
6. A Nation Divided
The spectrum of reactions — from joy and celebration to mourning, disbelief and fear — reflects how deeply divided Iranian society has become over decades of political repression, economic hardship and social upheaval. What many see as a moment of liberation, others experience as a profound loss — and for many more, it is at once a moment of hope and anxiety about what comes next.
With Iran now entering a period of intense uncertainty — both in terms of leadership succession and domestic stability — the varied reactions from its people underscore a nation at a historic crossroads
