The Government of Japan confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, that construction of the KSh 85 billion Mombasa Gate Bridge is set to begin. This project is financed under Japan’s Official Development Assistance programme, as stated by Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Hori Tomonobu.
Infrastructure Development and Key Details of the Bridge
The upcoming cable-stayed bridge will span approximately 1.4 kilometres across the Likoni Channel. The full project encompasses around 13 kilometres, including approach roads and interchanges, providing a permanent four-lane road link between Mombasa Island and the South Coast. It aims to serve as a more reliable and efficient alternative to the Likoni Ferry, which has long been a critical yet congested transit point.
The project follows years of delays caused by land acquisition, compensation issues, and environmental impact assessment requirements. Despite these hurdles, the Kenyan government and Japan have prioritized this infrastructure upgrade, which is expected to significantly enhance transportation and economic activities in the region.
Japan has previously supported Kenya’s infrastructure through financing projects such as the Mombasa Southern Bypass, Nyali Bridge, and Kilifi Bridge, demonstrating ongoing commitment to Kenya’s development objectives.
As construction prepares to commence, stakeholders and local communities anticipate the project’s completion will facilitate improved trade, tourism, and regional connectivity, reinforcing Kenya’s infrastructural advancements supported by international partnerships.
