Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been charged with wounding with intent following an alleged assault near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in northwest England. Barton, 43, and a second man, Gary O'Grady, 50, are accused of attacking a man who suffered serious injuries to his face and body on Sunday evening. The victim is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The incident occurred around 9pm on Sunday, March 8, prompting emergency services to rush to the scene. Barton and O'Grady were arrested and are due to appear at Wirral Magistrates' Court on Tuesday afternoon.

This isn't Barton's first controversy. He's been involved in several high-profile incidents, including a recent libel claim against former England forward Eni Aluko, where he was ordered to pay £339,000 in damages and legal costs. Barton has also faced criticism for his comments on social media and has previously been convicted of assault.
