The governor recently faced an impeachment but was rescued through the intervention of Raila and Ruto. Why Nairobi MCAs wanted Sakaja impeached At least 85 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) submitted their signatures endorsing the initiation of an impeachment process against the governor.
The motion was based on 20 distinct allegations, which the MCAs believed provided sufficient justification for his removal from office. Among the major accusations were claims of corruption, misuse of county funds, unethical behaviour, and failure to deliver on promises made during the 2022 gubernatorial campaign. The MCAs also faulted the governor for his limited involvement in key urban development matters, stating that he has been largely inaccessible.
How Johnson Sakaja was saved from impeachment Had the MCAs moved forward with their plan, Sakaja would have become the third governor to face impeachment in 2025, after the ones of Abdi Guyo of Isiolo and Kericho's Eric Mutai. Mutai and Guyo were saved by the Senate, which threw away their respective impeachments. Sakaja's situation was defused after Ruto and Raila intervened, summoning their respective allies in the County Assembly to de-escalate.
Sakaja was elected as Nairobi’s governor during the 2022 general election on a UDA ticket, securing 699,392 votes and defeating Jubilee Party’s Polycarp Igathe, who received 573,516 votes. Before assuming the governorship, Sakaja served as Nairobi’s senator from 2017 to 2022, succeeding Mike Sonko, who held the position as the city’s first senator following the 2013 elections.
