Kenya Participates in Global Urban Development Meeting
Former Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha is leading Kenya's delegation to New York for the United Nations midterm review of the New Urban Agenda, a global framework that guides sustainable urban development.
The meeting brings together representatives from member states to assess progress made since the adoption of the New Urban Agenda in 2016 and to discuss challenges facing rapidly growing urban centres.
Focus on Sustainable Cities
The review examines efforts by countries to improve housing, transport, infrastructure, environmental sustainability and access to essential public services in urban areas.
Kenya's participation provides an opportunity to share experiences in managing urban growth while learning from best practices adopted by other countries. Discussions are also expected to focus on inclusive planning, climate resilience, affordable housing and sustainable economic development.
Kenya's Urban Development Agenda
Kenya has continued implementing policies aimed at improving urban planning and expanding access to housing and public infrastructure. The government has also promoted programmes intended to enhance service delivery in towns and cities while addressing challenges such as informal settlements, congestion and inadequate infrastructure.
The country's participation in the review reflects its commitment to achieving the objectives of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11, which seeks to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Global Collaboration
The UN midterm review provides member states with a platform to evaluate progress, identify emerging urban challenges and strengthen international cooperation on sustainable urbanization. Outcomes from the meeting are expected to inform future policies and partnerships aimed at improving the quality of life in cities across the world.
