Several Kenyans were arrested on Tuesday during protests against the construction of a proposed Ebola quarantine centre in Nanyuki, a tourist town located under Mount Kenya. This facility, which is being built at Laikipia Air Base, is intended to quarantine Americans arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, an area currently experiencing a significant Ebola outbreak.

Protests and Local Opposition Over Ebola Quarantine Centre

The construction of the Ebola quarantine centre has sparked considerable unrest among local residents, many of whom oppose the project due to fears of disease transmission. Dozens gathered near the air base, some donning protective gear and carrying a coffin inscribed with "Ebola," symbolizing their opposition. Police responded by arresting several protesters and dispersing the crowd with tear gas.

"We don't have that disease in this country... they are bringing a virus into our country," said Zipporah Wachira, 30, reflecting the community's fears. Despite these protests, the government has committed to moving forward with the project, citing longstanding health partnerships with the United States and the need for preparedness against potential outbreaks.

Government and International Support for the Ebola Facility

The facility is expected to have 50 isolation beds and will be managed by US personnel. It is nearing completion and has already been a focal point of protests, including an earlier incident on June 1, where rights groups reported two deaths under circumstances that remain unclear. The Kenyan government maintains that the centre will serve both Kenyans and Americans, backed by a $13.5 million pledge from Washington for Ebola preparedness efforts.

While the project continues despite opposition, local politicians and the courts have raised concerns, with construction temporarily halted by a High Court order. Nevertheless, President William Ruto's administration insists that the facility is crucial for strategic health security and argues that Kenya's alliance with the US over the past 25-30 years justifies this development.

As the Democratic Republic of Congo faces a worldwide health emergency with over 515 confirmed infections and 91 deaths, neighboring countries remain vigilant. Uganda, which has recorded 19 cases, continues to monitor and respond to the evolving situation. The controversy over the Ebola quarantine centre in Nanyuki underscores the complex balance between international health collaboration and local community concerns.
