Nairobi, Kenya — 26 February 2026
Later in the day, President William Ruto presided over the commissioning of newly completed affordable housing units for members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), reaffirming his government’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel.
The housing project, developed under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme, is aimed at providing decent, modern, and dignified living conditions for military officers and their families.
🏘️ Improving Welfare for Service Members
Speaking during the ceremony at the military barracks, President Ruto emphasized that access to quality housing is a fundamental component of service welfare.
“Our soldiers dedicate their lives to protecting our sovereignty and securing our borders. It is our duty to ensure they and their families live in dignity,” the President said.
The newly constructed units feature modern amenities, reliable water supply, improved sanitation, and enhanced security infrastructure. The project also includes community facilities such as playgrounds, access roads, and green spaces designed to create a conducive family environment.
🇰🇪 Part of the National Affordable Housing Agenda
The housing development is part of the broader national Affordable Housing Programme, a key pillar of the government’s economic and social transformation strategy.
President Ruto noted that while the programme primarily targets civilians across the country, special consideration has been given to disciplined forces — including the military, police, and prison services — due to the nature of their work and frequent relocations.
He reiterated that expanding access to affordable housing not only improves living standards but also stimulates economic growth through job creation in construction and related sectors.
🔐 Strengthening Morale and Readiness
Senior KDF officials welcomed the initiative, saying that improved housing directly boosts morale, operational readiness, and family stability among officers.
Stable and decent accommodation reduces stress for service members, allowing them to focus on national security duties without worrying about their families’ welfare.
The President praised the Defence Forces for their continued professionalism and discipline, stating that investing in their well-being is an investment in national security.
🏗️ Infrastructure Modernization Efforts
In addition to housing, the President highlighted ongoing government efforts to modernize military infrastructure, including:
  • Upgrading training facilities
  • Improving healthcare services within barracks
  • Expanding educational opportunities for military families
  • Enhancing technological capacity
He said the government remains committed to ensuring Kenya’s armed forces are well-equipped, well-trained, and well-supported.
📌 A Broader Vision
The commissioning of the affordable housing units signals continued progress in addressing long-standing accommodation challenges within disciplined services.
As the ceremony concluded, President Ruto toured several of the completed units and interacted with military families set to move into the new homes.
The project marks another milestone in the government’s promise to enhance social protection and dignified living conditions for those who serve the nation
