The Kenyan delegation, led by Interior CS Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, and accompanied by Nairobi county officials led by Governor Johnson Sakaja and senior security personnel led by DIG Eliud Lagat, are in New York, USA, on a mission to learn from the New York Police Department (NYPD), one of the world's most successful urban policing institutions. This visit is part of Kenya's preparatory steps for launching the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.
Learning from NYPD's Successful Urban Policing Model
Kenyan officials have engaged with security officials and city leaders from New York, London, and Rome as part of consultations on the proposed policing model. The new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit aims to incorporate smart policing strategies, including visible patrols and the mandatory use of body cameras by officers. The goal is to improve responses to emerging security challenges, foster inter-agency collaboration, and strengthen police-public cooperation.
The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, is committed to developing a modern, professional, and technology-driven police force capable of effectively addressing security threats and ensuring the safety of Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
