The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has issued a stern call to action, urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), and the National Police Service (NPS) to intensify efforts against political violence, incitement, and the purported use of organized gangs ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Calls for Immediate and Decisive Action
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 18, the KNCHR emphasized the importance of independent investigations into reported cases of violence, property destruction, and incitement. The commission insists that those found responsible must be held accountable to prevent chaos during the upcoming elections.
The commission’s appeal underscores the critical need for law enforcement agencies to act decisively against those fomenting violence and using gangs as political tools, in order to safeguard the democratic process and maintain peace in the country.
With Kenya preparing for a highly contested election season, the role of security agencies and oversight bodies becomes even more significant in upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights against intimidation and violence.
The KNCHR’s call is a reminder of the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and proactive measures to mitigate election-related violence, ensuring a peaceful electoral process and the safety of all Kenyans.
