Police officers mounted roadblocks and intensified security checks on major roads leading into Nairobi on Tuesday morning ahead of the planned Saba Saba demonstrations, causing significant traffic disruptions and delays for thousands of commuters.

The affected routes include Lang'ata Road, Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, Jogoo Road, Kiambu Road, Thika Road, Ngong Road, Outer Ring Road, Pangani Interchange, and roads leading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Checkpoints were also reported at Blue Post, Kimbo, Ruiru, Githurai, Allsops, and the Kenyatta Road–Thika Road junction.

Heavy Traffic and Delays

The security operation led to long traffic snarl-ups as police stopped both private and public service vehicles for inspections. In several locations, commuters experienced extended delays, while some passengers were forced to continue their journeys on foot after public transport vehicles were unable to proceed toward the Central Business District (CBD).

Police Explain Heightened Security
The National Police Service (NPS) had earlier announced enhanced police checkpoints across Nairobi, stating that the measures were intended to maintain public order and protect lives and property during the annual Saba Saba commemorations. According to the service, the decision was informed by previous demonstrations that resulted in disruptions to business operations and movement within the city. Police also urged members of the public to cooperate with officers and comply with lawful instructions at the checkpoints.

Heightened Alert Ahead of Demonstrations
The increased security deployment comes ahead of planned Saba Saba demonstrations, which commemorate the historic July 7, 1990, pro-democracy protests. Authorities have maintained a heavy presence across Nairobi as they seek to prevent potential unrest while allowing security operations to proceed.

Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, expect delays on major roads, and follow traffic advisories issued by the relevant authorities as security operations continue throughout the day.
