According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was a coordinated effort involving detectives in Kisumu, with technical support from experts at the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operations Directorate at DCI headquarters. The collaborative effort has been hailed as a major success in curbing escalating crime in the region.
The arrest of the suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending an identification parade, led to the recovery of several critical items connected to previous crimes. Among the items recovered were a G3 rifle—suspected to have been stolen during a brazen raid on Nyalenda Police Patrol Base earlier this year—a motor vehicle believed to have been used as a getaway car, and several other valuables allegedly stolen during the string of robberies.
Investigators revealed that the recovered G3 rifle is linked to the February 27, 2026 raid on Nyalenda Police Patrol Base. During that attack, several police officers and a civilian were injured, and two fully loaded G3 rifles were stolen. The daring raid had sparked widespread concern about the security of police facilities in the region and raised fears of increased criminal activity. The recent recovery of one of these rifles marks a major win for law enforcement in addressing armed crime in Kisumu.
The suspect was also connected to a robbery that took place on March 17, 2026, at Arena Phase 4 Estate in Kisumu Central Sub-County. According to DCI, the gang allegedly forced entry into a business premises, stealing electronic items including a television, a woofer, computers, mobile phones, and other valuables. The suspects reportedly fled the scene in a waiting vehicle, later identified as KDH 812L, which has now been recovered by detectives.
In addition, the suspect was linked to a separate robbery on March 9, 2026, at Duka Moja Shopping Centre in Kakamega South Sub-County. In this incident, the suspects allegedly stole cash, a laptop, and several mobile phones before fleeing the scene. Further investigations connected the group to another robbery in Kajulu, Kisumu East Sub-County, where the suspects allegedly fired a shot at a shop door to gain entry and stole money and mobile phones. Witnesses said the robbers fled the scene on a motorcycle with a concealed number plate, highlighting the organized and mobile nature of the group’s operations.
The DCI emphasized that the operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle criminal networks in western Kenya. “The arrest and recovery of the firearm and vehicle are a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence-led operations. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover any remaining stolen firearms,” the statement read.
Security experts have noted that the increasing use of high-powered weapons such as G3 rifles in robberies poses a serious risk to both law enforcement officers and civilians. The successful recovery of the rifle is expected to prevent further violent crimes and enhance public safety in Kisumu and Kakamega counties.
Residents in Kisumu have welcomed the development, describing it as a relief amid growing concerns over rising crime in the region. “We are glad to see the police acting decisively. There has been a lot of fear in our community after these robberies, especially with reports of firearms being used. This arrest gives us hope that law enforcement is committed to keeping us safe,” said a local business owner who requested anonymity.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through DCI tip-off channels. They also assured residents that investigations will continue until all members of the robbery syndicate are apprehended, and all stolen property is recovered.
The DCI’s operation in Kisumu reflects a growing trend in Kenya toward proactive policing and intelligence-led interventions, which aim to prevent crime before it occurs and dismantle organized criminal networks. This arrest and the recovery of stolen firearms and vehicles are seen as crucial steps in reinforcing security in the region, particularly in areas that have experienced repeated incidents of violent robbery.
As investigations continue, law enforcement authorities are working tirelessly to identify and bring other suspects to justice, ensuring that the communities of Kisumu and Kakamega can feel safer and more secure. The operation also serves as a warning to criminal gangs that the police are determined to track down those responsible for violent crime and recover stolen property.
The DCI has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, urging residents to cooperate with ongoing investigations. “We encourage anyone with information related to these incidents to come forward. Community support is key to dismantling criminal syndicates and ensuring that justice is served,” the statement concluded.
