The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has confirmed that it conducted an enforcement operation targeting the popular "Shiquo Hii Style" footwear outlet located at RNG Plaza in Nairobi's Central Business District, leading to the seizure of goods suspected to be counterfeit. The raid, which has attracted widespread attention on social media, resulted in the confiscation of a large quantity of shoes and other merchandise allegedly bearing counterfeit international brand markings. Reports indicate that the seized stock was valued at millions of shillings.
Following the operation, business owner Teresia Wanjiku, popularly known as Shiquo wa Hii Style, publicly acknowledged the raid and revealed that her footwear shop had been left nearly empty after authorities removed the stock. In videos shared online, she described the incident as a significant setback for her business and urged fellow traders to ensure compliance with intellectual property regulations.
Massive Stock Seized
According to media reports, ACA officers conducted the operation after receiving intelligence regarding the sale of suspected counterfeit products. The seized merchandise reportedly included shoes resembling well-known international sportswear brands.
Shiquo stated that the seizure had a major financial impact on her business but emphasized that she would seek to rebuild and restructure her operations. She also encouraged other traders to learn from her experience and ensure that products sold in their businesses comply with legal requirements.
ACA's Mandate
The Anti-Counterfeit Authority is a state agency established under Kenya's Anti-Counterfeit Act to combat the manufacture, distribution, and sale of counterfeit goods. The agency regularly conducts enforcement operations aimed at protecting intellectual property rights, consumers, and legitimate businesses from the effects of illicit trade.
Recent ACA operations have targeted suspected counterfeit products in various sectors, including footwear, electronics, lubricants, alcoholic beverages, and other consumer goods.
Mixed Reactions
The raid has generated mixed reactions among Kenyans online. While some have expressed sympathy for the entrepreneur, others have supported the crackdown, arguing that counterfeit products undermine genuine brands, expose consumers to substandard goods, and negatively affect legitimate businesses.
