At least 15 people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road crash involving a matatu and a lorry along the Nyeri–Nyahururu road, authorities said.
Central Traffic Enforcement Officer Elizabeth Vivi confirmed the incident, describing it as one of the deadliest crashes in the region in recent months. “We have lost at least 15 people in thiand several others have been injured and rushed to nearby hospitals,” she said. “Preliminary reports indicate a head-on collision between the matatu and the lorry.”

The crash occurred earlier in the day along a busy stretch of the highway, a route frequently used by public service vehicles and commercial transporters. Emergency responders, including police and local residents, arrived at the scene shortly after the collision to assist in rescue efforts.

According to Vivi, investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. “We are working to establish the exact circumstances that led to this tragedy, including whether speeding or mechanical failure may have been involved,” she said. “We urge drivers to exercise caution, especially on busy highways.”

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath, with wreckage strewn across the road and victims trapped inside the vehicles. Rescue operations took several hours as responders worked to retrieve bodies and evacuate the injured.

The injured were taken to nearby health facilities, where several remain in critical condition. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

Police have reiterated calls for road safety, warning drivers against reckless behavior. “This is a painful reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic rules,” Vivi added. “We must all take responsibility to prevent such loss of life.”

The Nyeri–Nyahururu road has been the site of multiple accidents in the past, raising concerns about road safety and enforcement in the area.
