From Recovery Bed to Logistics Success: How Wahome Maina Built a Thriving Cargo Business Against All Odds

The Inspiring Journey of Nakuru’s Logistics Entrepreneur, Wahome Wa DGL

Nakuru-based entrepreneur Wahome Maina, popularly known as Wahome Wa DGL, is turning heads in Kenya’s freight industry with his remarkable story of resilience and entrepreneurship. His journey from being bedridden after a devastating accident to running a flourishing cargo business is a testament to determination, vision, and sheer grit.

In 2020, Wahome suffered a severe road accident that left him with a broken right leg, requiring metal implants and months of immobilization. For two long years, he battled through recovery, enduring the physical and emotional challenges of being bedridden.

Before the accident, Wahome worked as a driver for a flower company, a role that unexpectedly sparked his entrepreneurial dreams. He noticed opportunities to earn extra income by taking on small cargo and relocation jobs along his delivery routes. This side hustle ignited the vision of owning his own transport business.

“I started my company in 2019 while still employed as a driver delivering flowers for export at JKIA Airport. I began taking on small goods and relocation jobs from Nairobi to Gilgil, Olkalou, and Nyahururu, and it was then I realized I could build a real business,” Wahome recalled.

This led to the official registration of Denisse Group Limited in 2019, positioning Wahome to finally chase his entrepreneurial dream. But just as he was ready to take the leap, life threw him a curveball—a serious accident that could have ended his ambitions.

Yet, Wahome’s resolve never faltered. During his recovery, he dedicated himself not only to regaining mobility but also to planning the future of his company. He focused on marketing strategies and learning how to acquire essential transportation resources.

“While being treated from one hospital to another, I started planning how to hit the ground running once I could walk again. I created a Facebook page for my company and began designing promotional posters online,” he explained.

When he regained partial mobility, using a single walking stick, Wahome took a bold step: he invested his savings in a tuk-tuk, a vehicle suited to his physical condition, and began running small cargo operations.

Starting locally in Nyahururu Town, Wahome promoted his business tirelessly. He traveled as far as Narok, Limuru, Maralal, and Kabarnet with his tuk-tuk, building trust with clients and slowly growing his reputation.

Within a year, Wahome transitioned from managing small relocations to overseeing larger cargo operations. He partnered with truck and pickup owners, expanded his fleet, and brought in a rider for his tuk-tuk, allowing him to focus on managerial tasks and customer satisfaction.

By securing his first vehicle through asset financing, Wahome expanded into regular cargo transport, ultimately opening an office in Nakuru town. Today, Denisse Group Limited continues to grow, reflecting Wahome’s vision of providing reliable logistics services while inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
