Recent developments at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have seen a dramatic surge in the costs of essential medical services. This increase has sparked concern among patients and health advocates alike, as some fees have more than tripled within just a few months. The hospital, traditionally a critical access point for healthcare in Kenya, is now facing scrutiny over the affordability of its services.

The Rise in Medical Fees: What Patients Need to Know

Since April, the costs for various key medical procedures at KNH have surged significantly. For instance, the fee for an endoscopy has increased by 208%, now costing Sh20,000. Ultrasound scans are up by 167% to Sh4,800, while colonoscopies have risen by 155% to Sh25,000. Other procedures such as endoscopy with biopsy and colonoscopy with biopsy have also seen steep increases, climbing by 150% and 137% respectively. Additionally, the consultation fee has gone up by 35%, reaching Sh1,550.

This escalation in prices raises questions about access to affordable healthcare, especially for the most vulnerable populations who rely heavily on public hospitals like KNH. The sharp increase in fees could potentially discourage patients from seeking necessary medical attention, leading to adverse health outcomes across the community.

The reasons behind these dramatic hikes are not officially clear, but experts suggest factors such as increased operational costs and inflation may play roles. Whatever the cause, the impact on patients cannot be overstated.

Healthcare affordability is a critical component of public health policy, and sudden fee hikes like these underscore the need for transparent communication and regulatory oversight. As patients navigate these new costs, the government and hospital administrators must consider strategies to mitigate the financial burden on those in need of urgent medical care.
