Racheal Muthoni’s Tragic Death Sparks Outcry as Suspect Arrested in Rising Femicide Crisis.
Two days after gospel artist Racheal Muthoni Wandeto succumbed to severe burns at Kenyatta National Hospital, police have arrested a taxi driver believed to have been a regular customer. Josiah Njeru Njiri is set to be arraigned tomorrow in connection with her death, which has shocked the nation.
Racheal’s death, caused by being doused in petrol and set ablaze, comes amid growing concerns over gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in Kenya. Human rights organizations are urging swift government action, highlighting alarming statistics.
“Reports from Amnesty International, April 2026, show that at least eight femicide cases are reported each week, meaning at least one woman or girl is killed every day in Kenya. Women aged 18 to 35 make up 59% of all femicide cases nationally,” said FIDA board member Anita Byegon.
The tragedy has triggered widespread protests. On Wednesday, women marched from the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary to Vigilance House in Nairobi, demanding justice and calling on police to treat femicide as more than just statistics.
Racheal’s political tattoos, including an image of President William Ruto, have fueled online debates, with some politicians using her death to score points. However, her family is determined not to let the tragedy be politicized.
“That is why the DCI is there. Online can say anything... if we take sides now and investigations reveal otherwise, we may feel unfortunate. We believe they will leave no stone unturned to uncover the truth,” said Susan Wandeto, Racheal’s sister.
Even with an arrest made, the nation is left questioning whether Racheal’s death will finally prompt a national declaration of crisis or if her name will join the growing list of women lost to femicide.
