Roselyn Akombe: From Nyamira to the United Nations – The Courageous Journey of Kenya’s Fearless Commissioner.

Dr. Roselyn Kwamboka Akombe, a Kenyan born in Nyamira, rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in both the United Nations (UN) and Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Known for her calm demeanor during press briefings, her journey was marked by determination, sacrifice, and unwavering integrity. From working odd jobs in the U.S. to taking a stand against corruption in Kenya’s electoral process, Akombe’s story is one of resilience, courage, and principle.

Early Life and Education
Born on 21st November 1976 in Nyamira County, Roselyn grew up in a family that valued education. Her father was an education officer, and her mother was a teacher. She spent her formative years in Mwembe Tayari, Kisii, before moving to Kisumu.
Akombe initially dreamed of becoming a lawyer, inspired by figures like James Orengo and Martha Karua. She completed her O-levels at Nyabururu Girls High School and later joined the University of Nairobi, Kikuyu Campus, for a bachelor’s degree in Education. During her third year, she faced a life-changing moment when she became pregnant. Rather than derail her ambitions, this experience motivated her to work harder for the future of her daughter.

Personal Life
Roselyn Akombe is married to Richard Onyonka. Her journey as a mother and professional often overlapped, showcasing her ability to balance family responsibilities with demanding career ambitions.

Career Journey
After graduating, Akombe began her professional journey under Dr. Wanjiru Kabira, who encouraged her to pursue opportunities abroad. In the United States, she juggled multiple roles:
Security officer at night
Studying during the day
Taking care of her daughter

Her dedication led to an internship at the African Observer Mission to the UN, which later became a full-time role as an economic advisor.
Prior to joining the IEBC, Akombe worked as a Senior Advisor to the UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs in New York, gaining international experience and recognition.

Role at the IEBC
In January 2017, Akombe took on the role of IEBC commissioner, accepting a 70% pay cut from her UN salary. Her work included addressing press conferences and training field officers.

However, just 10 months into the job, she resigned, citing concerns over electoral integrity and personal safety. Her resignation came days before the Supreme Court annulled the 2017 election results.
In her resignation statement, she said:

“The commission in its current state cannot guarantee a credible election. I do not want to be party to such a mockery of electoral integrity.”
She also revealed fears for her safety, noting threats against her and even her brother. Her departure highlighted the challenges faced by honest officials within Kenya’s electoral system.

On Chris Msando’s Death
Roselyn later expressed willingness to testify at an independent judicial inquest into the murder of her colleague, Chris Msando, signaling her commitment to justice and accountability, despite resistance from other officials.

Legacy
Dr. Roselyn Akombe’s story is not only about career achievements but also about courage, integrity, and standing up for what is right. From a young girl in Nyamira to a global professional and Kenyan reformist, she exemplifies resilience, determination, and moral fortitude.
