Rachel Wandeto death sparks national outrage as President Ruto vows justice amid debate on political intolerance in Kenya
The death of gospel artist Rachel Wandeto has ignited widespread debate in Kenya over political intolerance, online activism, and the safety of individuals expressing political support in public.
Wandeto, a young Kenyan gospel singer, died in hospital after sustaining severe burn injuries in an attack that occurred in Nairobi’s Kasarani–Mwiki area. According to multiple local reports, she was allegedly doused with a flammable substance and set on fire by unidentified attackers. She had suffered burns covering nearly 70 percent of her body before succumbing to her injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital.

What led to the attack
Investigations suggest the attack may have been linked to her public political expression. Wandeto had recently gained online attention after tattooing an image of President William Ruto and the phrase “Two Terms” on her body, a move that triggered both praise and criticism across social media platforms.

Police reports and early media accounts indicate she was ambushed by unidentified men, with some accounts alleging she was targeted due to her perceived political affiliations. Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing, with a special police team assigned to track down the perpetrators.

Ruto’s response
Following her death, President William Ruto issued a public statement condemning the killing and pledging that those responsible would face justice regardless of their political or social affiliations.
He described Wandeto as a “hardworking and promising young woman” and called for an end to political intolerance in the country, warning that violence against individuals for their views threatens national unity and democratic freedoms.

Other senior government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, also condemned the incident and called for swift investigations, describing the killing as disturbing and unacceptable.

Public reaction
The case has sparked strong reactions across Kenya. Many citizens and civil society voices have condemned the brutality of the attack and called for accountability, while others have used the incident to raise concerns about rising political hostility and the risks faced by public figures and ordinary citizens who express political opinions openly.
Some commentators argue that the case highlights a deeper issue of political polarization and online hostility, where personal expression—especially on political matters—can escalate into real-world violence.
Ongoing investigation
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reportedly launched a probe into the incident, with authorities urging members of the public to provide information that could help identify the attackers. No arrests had been publicly confirmed at the time of reporting.
