From Microbiology Lecturer to Founder of Reale Hospital: Dr. Erick Kipkoech Rutto’s Inspiring Journey

How a Passion for Medicine and Determination Turned a Small Clinic into a Leading Healthcare Network in Kenya

Dr. Erick Kipkoech Rutto, a dedicated microbiology lecturer, has successfully transitioned from academia to healthcare entrepreneurship. Today, he is the proud owner of Reale Hospital, one of the leading healthcare providers in the Uasin Gishu region, offering a wide range of services including inpatient and outpatient care, dental and eye clinics, laboratory services, ultrasound, radiology, physiotherapy, surgical departments, and maternity care.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in an agricultural region, Dr. Rutto was closely tied to farming from a young age. After high school, he cultivated crops on a portion of his family’s land and later expanded into selling maize, potatoes, and vegetables across Western Kenya. His early entrepreneurial spirit prepared him for future challenges.

Driven by a passion for medicine, he pursued a five-year medical degree, graduating in 2003. The timing was ideal, as medical graduates were quickly absorbed into the workforce, allowing him to start his career immediately. Known for his dedication, Dr. Rutto prioritized his studies and patients over leisure, laying the foundation for his professional success.

Venturing into Business

Like many professionals, Dr. Rutto explored side businesses. He invested in the matatu business, operating a vehicle on the Eldoret–Kisumu route. However, high operational costs and loan repayments made the venture difficult to sustain, and he exited the business after two years, learning valuable lessons in entrepreneurship.

Building Reale Hospital

In 2009, Dr. Rutto opened his own clinic with a private practice license, dedicating himself fully to providing quality healthcare. His hard work quickly attracted patients, and what began as a small clinic eventually grew into Reale Hospital, which officially opened in 2013. Today, the hospital has expanded to multiple locations, including Baringo, Kitale, Nandi, Eldoret, and Nairobi, serving thousands of patients with comprehensive medical services.

Dr. Erick Kipkoech Rutto’s journey from a microbiology lecturer and small-scale farmer to a healthcare entrepreneur demonstrates the power of determination, vision, and commitment. Reale Hospital stands as a lasting testament to his dedication to improving healthcare in Kenya.
