Broadways Bread: How Thika’s Billionaire Shah Brothers Built a Kenyan Bakery Empire

From Humble Beginnings to an Industrial Powerhouse

Broadways Bread, one of Kenya’s most popular bakeries, started as a modest venture in Thika town, Kiambu County, in 1958. What began as a small one-deck oven bakery has grown into a thriving industrial enterprise, producing well-loved brands like Broadways and New Seneta. Over the decades, Broadways has become a household name, reflecting the vision, perseverance, and entrepreneurial genius of its founders, the late Sobhagchand Shah and Ratilal Shah.

The journey of Broadways is a testament to how determination and smart business decisions can transform a small local bakery into a billion-shilling company. The Shah brothers laid a solid foundation for the business, and their legacy continues to thrive under the leadership of the second generation, including Bimal Shah, Bejul Shah, and Hiten Shah. These modern-day stewards of the company have expanded production, diversified the product range, and established a strong distribution network across Kenya.

Strategic Partnerships and Expansion

Broadways’ growth was fueled by strategic collaborations and timely investments. In 1968, the bakery partnered with Unga Ltd (then known as Elliots Bread), gaining exposure to a wider market and tapping into a robust distribution network. This partnership lasted until 1977, after which the Shah brothers set out to independently scale their operations.

With an ambitious vision, they purchased four acres of land and secured a Ksh 15 million loan from Barclays Bank to construct a modern factory. Production capacity increased steadily: from 45,000 loaves initially to 70,000 loaves by 1979, thanks to the acquisition of the fully automated Baker Berkins bread plant. Subsequent investments, including the Spooner Plant in 1981 and the Werner & Pfleiderer Plant in 1985, further boosted capacity, cementing Broadways’ position as one of Kenya’s leading industrial bakeries.

The Legacy of the Shah Family

The enduring success of Broadways is closely tied to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Shah family. Through decades of innovation, strategic expansion, and a commitment to quality, the company has grown into a multi-billion shilling enterprise. Today, Broadways Bread is more than just a bakery; it is a symbol of Kenya’s thriving private sector and the power of vision-driven family businesses.

From a small oven in Thika to a sprawling factory producing tens of thousands of loaves daily, the story of Broadways is a classic Kenyan success story — one built on hard work, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of excellence.
