Tragedy in Kasarani: KMTC Final-Year Student Eugene Mutuku Thrown from Moving Matatu and Fatally Run Over

Heartbreaking Accident Claims Life of Aspiring Healthcare Professional During Hospital Attachment

Eugene Mutuku, a final-year student at KMTC Yatta (Matuu), was eagerly anticipating his graduation this December. As part of his course requirements, he had embarked on a mandatory attachment, gaining practical experience in the healthcare field.

On Tuesday of this week, Eugene began his attachment at a hospital in Kasarani. Just two days later, tragedy struck. On Thursday, while heading to the hospital, Eugene was violently thrown from a moving Nicco Movers Limited SACCO matatu, registration number KDV 713J, by a conductor. He landed on the tarmac and was tragically run over.

A good Samaritan witnessed the horrifying incident and immediately rushed to Eugene’s aid, lifting him off the road despite his writhing pain. As they tried to get him urgent medical attention, the Samaritan encountered the very same matatu at Garden Estate, still picking up passengers. He pleaded with the crew to help take Eugene to the hospital, but they refused, claiming they intended to go to the police station instead.

With no other option, the good Samaritan continued and rushed Eugene to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Sadly, despite the efforts to save him, Eugene succumbed to his injuries, cutting short the life of a promising young healthcare professional.

This tragic incident raises serious concerns about matatu safety, passenger conduct, and accountability in Nairobi’s public transport system. Families, students, and commuters are left mourning a life lost in circumstances that could have been prevented.
