The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully rescued an adult male Maasai giraffe that was found with a wire snare tightly wrapped around its right hind limb at the ILRI Athi Kapiti Ranch in Kajiado County.
According to KWS, the giraffe was discovered with the snare causing an injury to its leg, prompting an immediate response by a veterinary and wildlife rescue team. The team safely immobilized the animal to allow for treatment and the careful removal of the wire snare.
Veterinary Treatment Conducted
After removing the snare, veterinary officers cleaned and treated the wound to prevent infection and support healing. The giraffe was then monitored before being safely released back into its natural habitat within the ranch.
KWS said the prompt intervention increased the animal's chances of making a full recovery.
Threat of Wire Snares to Wildlife
Wire snares are among the major threats facing Kenya's wildlife. Often set illegally for bushmeat hunting, the traps can severely injure or kill animals that become entangled, including protected species such as giraffes, zebras, antelopes and elephants.
Animals caught in snares may suffer deep wounds, restricted movement, infections, or even death if they are not rescued in time.
KWS Calls for Public Vigilance
KWS has continued to urge members of the public, landowners and conservation partners to report injured or trapped wildlife as quickly as possible. The agency says timely reporting plays a critical role in saving animals and combating illegal poaching activities.
The successful rescue at ILRI Athi Kapiti Ranch highlights the importance of coordinated conservation efforts in protecting Kenya's wildlife and preserving the country's rich biodiversity.
