Nairobi affected from heavy weekend rains that dumped up to 160 millimetres of water across parts of the city, triggering flash floods, paralyzing traffic and leaving several neighborhoods waterlogged.

The intense downpour, which began on Friday , Saturday continued into Sunday, overwhelmed drainage systems in multiple areas. Roads in low-lying sections of the capital were submerged, forcing motorists to abandon vehicles while commuters waded through knee-deep water.

Emergency responders reported flooding in residential estates and along key transport corridors, with some homes taking in water as storm runoff spilled into streets and compounds. In several locations, business owners hurried to move goods to higher ground to avoid losses.

Authorities urged residents living near rivers and flood-prone zones to remain vigilant as water levels rose following the sustained rainfall. Disaster management teams were placed on standby to respond to emergencies.

Meteorological officials had earlier warned of intense rainfall across central Kenya, cautioning that urban centres such as Nairobi were particularly vulnerable to flooding due to poor drainage and rapid runoff.

Although the rains eased by Sunday evening, waterlogged roads and debris continued to disrupt movement in parts of the city as cleanup efforts began.
