From Pain to Punchlines: The Inspiring Rise of Nakuru Comedian Squiro (Daniel Okwiri)
Daniel Okwiri (Squiro): A Journey of Struggle, Resilience, and Comedy
Daniel Okwiri, popularly known as Squiro, is a Kenyan content creator and comedian whose story is marked by hardship, resilience, and an unshakable determination to rise above discrimination and difficult childhood experiences.
Born in 1998 in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, Daniel spent his early childhood there before life took a painful turn after the death of his father. Following this loss, he relocated to Nakuru County, where he was taken in by his uncle, who stepped in to support him and his brother by sponsoring their education.
Early Life and Education
Daniel’s education journey began at Crater Academy for his primary schooling. He later joined St Nicholas High School and eventually Bahati Boys’ High School, where he completed his KCSE.
Despite the support from his uncle, life at home remained financially difficult. Raised in a struggling household led by a single mother without formal employment, Daniel often experienced extreme hardship.
There were days when the family went without food, a reality that shaped much of his understanding of struggle and survival at a young age.
Childhood Struggles and Discrimination
Daniel describes his childhood as emotionally challenging, largely due to his appearance and how others treated him. He became withdrawn and shy, often avoiding interaction with other children because he feared judgment and ridicule.
As he grew older, the discrimination continued even in school. He recalls moments where he would hesitate to participate in class due to how classmates perceived him. This affected his confidence and academic performance.
One particularly painful experience involved a teacher who would publicly insult him, at times telling him he “belonged in a game park with animals.” These words left deep emotional scars and negatively impacted his performance in that subject, as he began avoiding interaction with both teachers and students.
However, not all experiences were negative. Daniel also remembers a supportive teacher who showed care and concern for his wellbeing, offering him encouragement during difficult moments.
Turning Point: Finding His Voice Through Comedy
Despite the challenges, Daniel eventually transformed his pain into purpose. His teenage years in high school became a turning point as he slowly gained confidence and began interacting more freely with peers.
This growth later pushed him toward comedy and content creation—a space where he could express himself and inspire others who face similar struggles.
Daniel says his goal is to encourage people dealing with discrimination and low self-esteem to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their passions without fear.
He also credits inspiration from Kenyan comedian Chipukeezy, whose work motivated him in his creative journey.
Today, Squiro uses comedy not only as entertainment but also as a tool for healing, awareness, and motivation for others facing personal battles.
Message of Hope
Daniel’s message is simple but powerful: self-belief and persistence matter more than the opinions of others. He encourages people to focus on what they love and not allow negativity or discrimination to define their future.
“Do what you love and don’t limit yourself because if you do so, you’ll not get to where you want to be,” he says.
