At least 35 people were killed after heavily armed gunmen launched a coordinated attack on Niger's largest airport, Diori Hamani International Airport, in the capital, Niamey, on Thursday. The airport, which also hosts military facilities, came under attack in the early hours of the day, with residents reporting loud explosions and sustained gunfire around the area.
Casualties Include Soldiers, Civilians and Attackers
According to Niger's Defence Ministry, the death toll comprised 22 attackers, 11 soldiers and two civilians. Authorities said security forces successfully repelled the assault after intense fighting. Four attackers were injured during the operation, while approximately 20 suspects were arrested. Security personnel also recovered weapons and ammunition from the scene.
Security Forces Restore Control
Following the attack, Nigerien security forces secured the airport and launched operations to track down any remaining suspects. Despite the violence, officials said the airport resumed normal operations after the area was declared secure. Roadblocks and increased security patrols were reported around the airport and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Second Major Attack This Year
The assault marks the second major attack targeting Diori Hamani International Airport in less than five months, highlighting persistent security challenges facing Niger. The airport is considered a strategic facility, serving both civilian aviation and military operations in the country.
