The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations and made several arrests over what authorities describe as a planned attempt to infiltrate and hijack the June 25 demonstrations in Kenya.
According to reports, detectives are pursuing individuals suspected of organizing criminal activities under the cover of the planned protests. The investigations come amid heightened security concerns as the country marks the anniversary of the June 25, 2024 anti-government demonstrations that culminated in the storming of Parliament and widespread unrest.
Security Agencies Intensify Operations
The DCI says it is monitoring individuals believed to be mobilizing groups to engage in violence, vandalism, looting, and other unlawful activities during the demonstrations. Authorities have indicated that several suspects have already been arrested while investigations continue to identify others linked to the alleged scheme.
The agency has maintained that while peaceful assembly is protected under the Constitution, criminal elements seeking to exploit demonstrations for unlawful purposes will face legal action.
Concerns Ahead of June 25 Anniversary
The planned demonstrations coincide with the anniversary of the 2024 protests that erupted over the Finance Bill and later evolved into broader calls for government accountability. The events of June 25, 2024 saw protesters breach Parliament grounds, leading to violent confrontations with security forces and numerous casualties.
Since then, June 25 has become a symbolic date for many young Kenyans advocating for reforms, accountability, and improved governance.
DCI Warns Against Violence
Investigators have urged members of the public participating in demonstrations to remain peaceful and avoid involvement in activities that could endanger lives or destroy property. The agency has also warned individuals financing or coordinating violent acts that they will be held accountable under the law.
Call for Peaceful Demonstrations
As preparations for the June 25 demonstrations continue, both security agencies and civil society groups have called for restraint and adherence to the law. Authorities say security measures have been enhanced to safeguard lives and property while allowing citizens to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully.
