The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued fresh guidelines clarifying how candidates without Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) certificates can register for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
According to KNEC's 2026 KCSE registration regulations, candidates who do not possess a KCPE certificate but hold other recognized primary education qualifications will still be eligible to register for the national examination, provided they meet specific requirements.
KNEC stated that holders of foreign primary education certificates or other primary school qualifications must obtain an official equation letter from the council to validate their academic credentials before registration. Candidates with primary certificates other than KCPE are also required to sit and pass the KNEC KCSE Qualifying Test before they can be allowed to register for the examination.
The council further noted that candidates must provide evidence showing they have spent at least three years after completing primary education before seeking registration for KCSE. In addition, applicants are required to present valid identification documents such as a national identity card, passport, alien card, or birth certificate where applicable.
For private candidates, KNEC requires a confirmation letter from an approved examination centre where practical examinations will be undertaken. Registration forms must also be completed and submitted through the relevant Sub-County Director of Education (SCDE) offices.
No late registration will be allowed
The clarification comes as KNEC continues preparations for the 2026 KCSE registration exercise, which is being conducted through the council's online registration platform. The examination body has also emphasized that there will be no late registration, urging schools and candidates to ensure all required documents are submitted within the stipulated timelines.
KNEC says the directives are intended to ensure that all eligible learners, including those with alternative educational backgrounds, have an opportunity to access national examinations while maintaining the integrity of the registration process.
