The Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the African Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (AAACA), marking a significant milestone for Kenya's role in advancing anti-corruption efforts across Africa.
Mohamud was elected to represent the Eastern Africa region during the 8th AAACA General Assembly held in Nairobi. His election places Kenya among the continental body's decision-makers and underscores the confidence that African anti-corruption agencies have in the country's contribution to promoting integrity, accountability and good governance.
Three-Year Mandate
The newly elected Executive Committee will serve a three-year term and comprises representatives from the five regions of Africa. As Eastern Africa's representative, Mohamud will work alongside committee members from North, West, Central and Southern Africa to guide the association's programmes and strengthen cooperation among anti-corruption agencies across the continent.
New AAACA Leadership
During the General Assembly, delegates also elected a new leadership team to steer the association. Dr. Modibo Sacko of Mali's Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Enrichment (OCLEI) was elected President, while Michael Reza of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission became First Vice President. Khaled Benguernane of Algeria's High Authority for Transparency, Prevention and Fight Against Corruption was elected Second Vice President.
Strengthening Continental Cooperation
The 8th AAACA General Assembly brought together anti-corruption agencies from across Africa to deliberate on strategies aimed at combating corruption, promoting transparency and enhancing institutional integrity. Mohamud's election is expected to strengthen Kenya's influence in shaping continental anti-corruption policies while fostering greater collaboration among African anti-corruption institutions.
