Nairobi Gears Up for the 12th International Day of Yoga with Free Mats and T-Shirts for Participants.
Celebrate Wellness, Mindfulness, and Community Through Yoga This June 21
The countdown has begun for the 12th International Day of Yoga, with just 17 days left before Nairobi joins the global wellness celebration. This year’s event will take place at the Oshwal Centre Grounds, Ring Road, Westlands, on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:00 AM.
Organised by the High Commission of India in Nairobi, in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Ministry of AYUSH, the event promises an inspiring start to the day for yoga enthusiasts of all ages.
Since the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, the observance has grown into a global movement promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being through yoga practice. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed yoga as “an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition” that unites mind and body.
Nairobi’s edition is expected to draw hundreds of participants, reflecting the city’s growing interest in holistic wellness and cultural exchange. To encourage participation, organisers are offering free yoga T-shirts and mats to those who register in advance. Registration is mandatory and can be completed via the event’s QR code provided on promotional materials.
Over the years, the High Commission of India in Nairobi has actively promoted yoga across Kenya. Outreach programs have reached at least 15 counties, including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Nyeri, introducing more than 20,000 Kenyans to the practice. Nairobi’s flagship event has previously attracted over 3,000 participants, with similar sessions also held at the United Nations Office in Nairobi and other institutions.
Officials report that participation has steadily increased, with many attendees noting improvements in fitness, stress management, and overall well-being. NP Singgh, Second Secretary for Education, Yoga, and Culture at the High Commission, described the initiative as “a long-term effort to encourage healthier lifestyles and greater awareness of yoga’s benefits.”
This year, Nairobi is once again set to celebrate the harmony of mind, body, and spirit with yoga, bringing the city together in a global tradition of wellness.
