On this day, two years ago, June 3, 2024, Kenya mourned the loss of one of its most cherished media personalities, Mary Njambi Koikai, affectionately known as Jahmby Koikai or Fyah Mummah.
Jahmby was more than a vibrant radio presenter and reggae DJ; she was a powerful voice, an ardent advocate, and an inspiration to many. Her work on stations like Metro FM and QFM earned her the nickname "Reggae Empress" thanks to her infectious energy, lively personality, and deep passion for reggae music. Starting from humble beginnings as an intern at KBC, she built a remarkable career and became a household name across Kenya.
Her Battle and Advocacy for Women’s Health
Beyond her career in media, Jahmby courageously shared her extensive struggle with endometriosis, a painful and often misunderstood condition. For over 20 years, she endured immense suffering, underwent 18 surgeries, and faced life-threatening complications. Instead of remaining silent, she chose to speak out about her condition, helping thousands of women understand their pain and encouraging them to seek medical aid and support.
Her death on June 3, 2024, at the age of 38, while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital, marked a significant moment in Kenya’s health discourse. Her passing sparked nationwide and international conversations about women’s health, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of endometriosis.
Two years later, Jahmby's legacy as a fearless EndoWarrior continues to inspire. She transformed her personal struggles into a mission that impacts lives, reminding us of the importance of health advocacy and resilience.
May her soul continue to rest in eternal peace.
