From Buses to Business Empire: How Ong’era Moturi Built Generational Wealth and Diversified Into Hotels, Supermarkets & Hardware
The Ong’era Family Legacy: Guardian Angel, Nyamira Express, and Beyond
Guardian Angel Bus Company is among the most reputable transport services operating in Western Kenya. Known for its comfortable buses, skilled drivers, and affordable fares, the company has become a household name in the region. The business was founded by the late Ong’era Moturi, a visionary businessman and powerbroker, who also owned Nyamira Express, a bus service catering to a more budget-conscious clientele.
Ong’era Moturi’s entrepreneurial journey was not built overnight. He inherited the reins of the family business from his father, Nahashon Ong’era Omote, and expanded the family’s footprint into multiple sectors. Today, the Ong’era family business empire includes Guardian Hotel, Guardmart Supermarket, and Mwamoturi Hardware, all contributing to a diversified and resilient family legacy.
Tragically, Ong’era Moturi passed away in 2019 after suffering a stroke while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital. His death, however, did not slow the family’s business momentum. The leadership of Guardian Angel has been passed on to his sons, Julius Mukoya Ong’era and Rogers Ong’era Moturi. Julius currently serves as the executive director, overseeing daily operations and strategic growth. Rogers has been instrumental in maintaining the brand’s visibility and community presence, notably assisting local organizations such as Shabana FC with logistical support.
“Thank you Hon Rogers Ong’era Moturi: Business mogul behind Guardian Angel, Nyamira Express, and Guardmart supermarkets. Your passion and support truly light up the community. Keep shining and inspiring us all,” read one of the gratitude notes from the football club.
Guardian Angel continues to modernize its fleet in the face of stiff competition from rivals such as ENA Coach, a spin-off from the popular Transline Bus. The company has also introduced 14-seater Toyota Hiace minibuses, which have quickly gained popularity among passengers seeking comfort and convenience.
The Ong’era family story is a testament to vision, persistence, and strategic diversification, showing how transport entrepreneurship can evolve into a multi-sector business empire that benefits generations.
