Mahindi Hotel: The Iconic Eldoret Landmark That Once Towered Over the City

A Glimpse Into Eldoret’s Golden Era of Hospitality.

Mahindi Hotel, located in the heart of Eldoret’s central business district, is more than just a building—it is a symbol of the city’s vibrant history and entrepreneurial spirit. During the 1970s and 1980s, it stood out as a premier destination, offering visitors a mix of entertainment, dining, and accommodation.

The three-story hotel also housed several businesses, including the famous Mini Bar, where a jukebox delighted music lovers of the era. For a time, Mahindi Hotel held the distinction of being the tallest building in Eldoret, a title it retained until the New Miyako Hotel was completed in 1980.

The hotel was named after its visionary proprietor, Mahindi Gitonga, the elder brother of Ngugi Gitonga, who owns other notable Eldoret establishments such as Sosiani View Hotel and Eldo Bliss Hotel. The Gitonga family hails from Gakoe village in Kiambu. Their father, Gitonga, worked for a European settler and passed on bicycle repair skills he had learned from his employer to his sons.

Mahindi and Ngugi were also part of Kenya’s historic struggle for independence. During the Mau Mau emergency in 1952, they sought refuge in the Aberdare Forest while resisting British colonial rule, returning only after Kenya achieved independence in 1963.

After independence, the brothers started a bicycle repair business in Subukia, Nakuru County. Their journey then took them to Kapsabet and eventually to Eldoret in 1968. Using a bank loan, Mahindi purchased the land where Mahindi Hotel now stands and constructed the building, marking the beginning of a lasting legacy. Meanwhile, Ngugi expanded his bicycle repair business and played a key role in the Nyakinyua land buying company, helping many members of the Kikuyu community acquire land in the Rift Valley.

In 1985, Mahindi relocated to Nairobi to explore new business opportunities. While Mahindi passed away in 2016 and Ngugi in 2020, the story of Mahindi Hotel and the entrepreneurial spirit of the Gitonga brothers continues to be celebrated in Eldoret.
