Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata has stated that the outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has weakened Deputy President Kithure Kindiki's influence in the Mount Kenya region. Kang'ata emphasized that political leaders need to demonstrate robust local support before seeking broader national influence, underscoring the region's historically united voting bloc rooted in shared history, language, and regional interests.
The Significance of Local Support in Mount Kenya Politics
The governor pointed out that the Ol Kalou by-election has significantly impacted Deputy President Kindiki's political standing within Mount Kenya. He remarked, "The Ol Kalou by-election has definitely shaken Deputy President Kithure Kindiki's position in Mt Kenya. In politics, one must first demonstrate backing within their own region before engaging in negotiations with the broader national arena." Kang'ata added that the region's unity is driven by deep-rooted cultural and historical ties, which continue to influence electoral decisions.
Kang'ata also observed that the election results underscore the increasing independence of Kenyan voters. Unlike in the past when political influence and financial incentives heavily swayed decisions, voters now exercise more discretion based on personal convictions. The governor urged political leaders to engage in peaceful democratic competition, emphasizing that political power is gained through persuasion and can be lost through the ballot box if not maintained through genuine support.
