Kenya has stepped up efforts to transition to a circular economy following a high-level engagement between government officials and the (KEPSA), aimed at fast-tracking the Circular Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (CESIP). 

Speaking after the meeting led by , officials emphasized the urgency of aligning policy, innovation, and investment to cut waste and unlock green growth. 

“The transition to a circular economy is central to our efforts to build a resilient, resource-efficient, and low-carbon future,” an official said. “Through CESIP, we are aligning policy, innovation, and investment across key sectors to reduce waste, create green jobs, and drive sustainable economic growth.”

The government also pushed for deeper county-level involvement, calling on the to ensure inclusive participation in shaping and implementing the strategy.
 
“We must leverage the Council of Governors to capture views from counties and guarantee timely, inclusive participation,” the official added. “At the same time, we need to expand engagement through virtual platforms to broaden participation and accelerate this process.”

In a bid to strengthen the strategy with global insights, officials stressed the importance of involving experts handling (MEAs), particularly those engaged in global plastics treaty negotiations and scientific panels on chemicals and waste.
 
“Involving our MEAs team—especially those engaged in global plastics treaty negotiations and the science-policy panel on chemicals and waste—will enrich the strategy with global perspectives and best practices,” the official noted.

The meeting further highlighted the critical role of enforcing (EPR), describing it as key to transforming Kenya’s waste management ecosystem.
 
“The effective implementation of EPR Regulations remains critical in promoting sustainable waste management while catalyzing local manufacturing, recycling, and value addition,” the official said.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to working with the private sector and other stakeholders to deliver a practical, results-driven roadmap that advances climate action and supports Kenya’s long-term development agenda.
