Orengo Protests Abrupt Security Withdrawal, Calls for Immediate Explanation from Police

Siaya Governor James Orengo has penned a strongly-worded protest letter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja following the sudden removal of his security detail, including officers stationed at his Nairobi residence.

In the letter dated May 20, 2026, Governor Orengo described the withdrawal as “abrupt and unprocedural,” noting that it occurred on Tuesday evening without prior notice, formal communication, or provision of suitable replacements.

“As a State Officer under the Constitution of Kenya, the provision of security is not a privilege or a discretionary favour; it is a statutory entitlement designed to facilitate the execution of official mandates without fear of compromise or harm,” Orengo emphasized in the correspondence.

The governor has demanded an official explanation from the police service regarding the grounds on which the withdrawal was authorized. He also called for the immediate reinstatement or replacement of his security detail at all designated stations, including his residence in Nairobi.

“I look forward to your prompt response and rectification of this situation,” the letter reads in part, highlighting the urgency and seriousness of the matter.

This move comes amid growing concerns over security protocols for State Officers, sparking debates on whether such withdrawals are consistent with the statutory provisions guaranteeing protection for public officials.
