The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) will lead Kenya's national commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADA) on Friday, June 26, at the NACADA Miritini Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Mombasa.
The annual event brings together government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, healthcare professionals, and members of the public to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote strategies for preventing substance use disorders.
Focus on Emerging Drug Challenges
This year's commemoration will be held under the theme of developing innovative responses to emerging drug challenges. The event is expected to highlight evolving trends in drug use, the growing availability of new psychoactive substances, and the need for evidence-based prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programmes.
NACADA says the focus will be on strengthening partnerships and encouraging the adoption of new approaches to address changing patterns of substance abuse in Kenya.
Raising Public Awareness
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26, aims to increase global awareness of the impact of illicit drugs on individuals, families, and communities.
In Kenya, the day also serves as an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of early intervention, access to treatment services, and community involvement in preventing drug and alcohol abuse.
Commitment to Prevention and Rehabilitation
By hosting this year's national event at the NACADA Miritini Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, the authority seeks to showcase the role of rehabilitation facilities in supporting recovery and reintegration for people affected by substance use disorders.
The commemoration is expected to reaffirm Kenya's commitment to combating drug abuse through prevention, enforcement, treatment, rehabilitation, and collaboration with local and international partners.
