Richard Momoima Onyonka is one of Kenya’s most outspoken politicians, known for his fearless criticism of government policies and his strong presence in national debates. But beyond the political arena lies a deeply personal story that has recently captured public attention — the story of a man raised between two homes, two identities, and what he describes as two fathers.
The conversation around Onyonka’s family background intensified following the death of his mother, Mama Teresia Nyaboke Omoke, in April 2026. As mourners gathered to celebrate her life, the Kisii senator opened up about a childhood many Kenyans had never heard about.

According to reports, Onyonka explained that his life was shaped by both his biological father, the late Zachary Onyonka, and another man who played a fatherly role during his upbringing. The revelation surprised many people who had long associated him solely with the powerful Onyonka political family

Dr. Zachary Onyonka was one of the most influential politicians in Kenya during the administrations of Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi. He served in several senior ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Education, Trade, and Planning. Known for his sharp political mind and influence in Kisii politics, he remained a towering figure until his death in 1996.

Yet despite growing up connected to such a powerful political name, Richard Onyonka’s childhood was far from privileged. During his mother’s funeral preparations, the senator revealed that his parents separated while he was still young, forcing his mother to raise him under difficult circumstances. He disclosed that he did not begin school in nursery or Class One like many children, but instead joined directly in Class Three because of financial and family hardships.

Onyonka credited his late mother for shaping his resilience, discipline, and determination. He described her as his “first teacher,” saying she instilled in him courage, faith, and the importance of education even when life was difficult.

It is this complicated upbringing that gave rise to the phrase “a man with two fathers.” One father gave him his political name and legacy, while another helped shape his upbringing and survival during the difficult years after his parents separated. The senator reportedly spent parts of his childhood moving between different homes and villages, navigating two worlds that would later influence his identity and politics.

The story also explains why questions emerged after the death of his mother over why he carries the surname “Onyonka” instead of “Omoke,” his mother’s family name. The senator’s life reflects the realities of many African families where children are often raised not only by biological parents, but also by guardians, relatives, and community figures who become parental pillars in their lives.

Despite the challenges, Onyonka rose through the ranks of Kenyan politics to become Member of Parliament for Kitutu Chache before later being elected senator for Kisii County. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a vocal defender of accountability and governance reforms. In recent years, he has frequently appeared at the center of national debates involving corruption, youth frustrations, and controversial government deals.

His political roots, however, remain closely tied to his father’s legacy. Onyonka has on several occasions spoken proudly about Dr. Zachary Onyonka’s role in Kenya’s political history. In 2025, he revealed that his father once secretly sheltered Yoweri Museveni in Kenya during a turbulent political period in Uganda. According to the senator, Museveni sought refuge in their Kisii home while fleeing political persecution in the late 1970s.

Today, Richard Onyonka’s story stands as more than a political biography. It is a story about identity, resilience, family separation, and the complex realities behind public figures. Behind the senator’s fiery speeches and political battles is a man shaped by two fathers, a determined mother, and a childhood marked by hardship and survival.
