Emurua Dikirr By-Election: Residents Elect New MP After Johana Ng’eno’s Death
Residents of Emurua Dikirr Constituency went to the polls on Thursday, May 14, 2026, in a closely watched parliamentary by-election to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of former MP Johana Ng’eno.
The by-election was triggered after the death of Ng’eno in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula officially declared the seat vacant in March, paving the way for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to organize the mini-poll.

The IEBC scheduled the by-election for May 14, alongside two ward by-elections in Samburu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. Polling stations opened at 6 a.m. and closed at 5 p.m., with the electoral commission assuring voters of a transparent and peaceful exercise.

The contest attracted five candidates, with the main race shaping up between candidates from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). Among those cleared to contest were David Keter of UDA, Vincent Rotich of DCP, Desma Cherono of PNU, Gideon Koech of NVPK, and Kenneth Kiprono of the Republican Liberty Party.

Campaigns ahead of the election were intense, reflecting the growing political rivalry in the region. Political observers viewed the by-election as an important test for major parties ahead of the 2027 General Election. The campaigns officially ended 48 hours before voting day, in line with electoral laws.

Preliminary and later confirmed results showed UDA candidate David Keter emerging victorious in the parliamentary race. Reports indicated that Keter maintained an early lead during tallying before eventually being declared the winner.

The by-election also highlighted the continuing importance of local political contests in Kenya, especially in regions where party loyalty and grassroots mobilization strongly influence voter turnout. Despite concerns over low turnout in some polling stations, the exercise was largely conducted peacefully under the supervision of the IEBC.

The election now ushers in a new chapter for Emurua Dikirr as residents look to their newly elected MP to address key issues affecting the constituency, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth unemployment.
