Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has pledged to transform Kakamega County into Africa's second-largest gold mining hub if elected governor in the 2027 General Election. The senator unveiled the ambitious vision through a social media post, saying the county has the potential to become a leading centre for gold production and investment.

To illustrate his proposal, Khalwale shared edited images of himself against the Johannesburg skyline, comparing his vision for Kakamega with South Africa's renowned mining industry.

Rich Gold Deposits

Kakamega has a long history of gold mining dating back to the 1930s. Recent exploration activities have also renewed interest in the region after mining companies confirmed commercially viable gold deposits in western Kenya.
Supporters of the proposal argue that expanding the mining sector could create employment opportunities, attract investors, improve infrastructure and boost the local economy.

Challenges to the Plan
Despite the optimism, mining experts note that mineral resources in Kenya are regulated by the national government. County governments have limited authority over licensing and regulation of large-scale mining operations, meaning the success of such a plan would depend on cooperation with the national government, investors and local communities.
