Panic as Light Aircraft Crashes During Takeoff at Maasai Mara Airstrip — No Casualties Reported
Emergency Responders Rush to Scene After Aircraft Accident in Narok County
A wave of panic swept through the Maasai Mara National Reserve on Monday, June 1, after a light aircraft carrying tourists crashed during takeoff at Ol Kiombo Airstrip in Narok County. Fortunately, officials confirmed that no casualties or serious injuries were reported.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when the aircraft suffered a tyre burst during takeoff, causing it to veer off the runway and crash within the airstrip perimeter. Emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene, and images captured moments after the crash showed several people, including uniformed personnel, running toward the damaged aircraft to assist in rescue efforts. Nearby, another small white aircraft remained parked safely, untouched by the accident.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed that all passengers and crew escaped unharmed. Authorities emphasized that despite the dramatic nature of the crash, everyone on board was safe.
This accident is part of a series of aviation mishaps in Kenya this year. In May, a skydiving aircraft operating in Diani was forced to make an emergency landing, though, similarly, no serious injuries were reported.
Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation into the Maasai Mara crash to determine the exact cause and prevent future occurrences. Officials also indicated that all other reported aviation incidents across the country are being carefully reviewed.
As tourism continues to be a major economic driver in Kenya, especially in wildlife destinations like Maasai Mara, ensuring aviation safety remains a top priority for both operators and regulatory bodies.
