The Ministry of Education has mandated a comprehensive safety audit of all boarding schools in the country, responding to recent deadly dormitory fires, including the incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru. This initiative aims to bolster safety standards and protect students in residential institutions.

Ministry Orders Nationwide Safety Audit of Boarding Schools

The directive, announced during an 'Elimu Mashinani' event in Wajir County, requires thorough inspections to be conducted within the next ten days, beginning June 2. Education officials are tasked with verifying whether schools meet established safety standards and providing recommendations for improvements.

The inspections will focus on crucial safety aspects such as dormitory safety protocols, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, electrical installations, and other protective measures. The aim is to identify and rectify safety lapses promptly to prevent further casualties.

Following the inspections, the Ministry has vowed to take strict disciplinary actions against principals, teachers, or institutions found to be endangering students’ lives through negligence or violation of safety regulations. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding students amidst heightened concerns over recent fire tragedies.

Schools found to be non-compliant could face closures or sanctions, as the Ministry enforces compliance with safety guidelines. Notably, the recent fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, which resulted in 16 fatalities, prompted this swift government response. The incident highlighted issues such as overcrowding and poor safety enforcement, raising serious concerns about students' welfare.

In previous meetings with education field officers, principals, and directors, the Ministry emphasized the importance of strict adherence to safety standards, but some administrators had reportedly overlooked these directives. The ongoing inspections serve as a renewed effort to ensure compliance and prevent future tragedies, reaffirming the government’s policy to prioritize student safety in boarding schools.
