Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has publicly accused the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of orchestrating efforts to infiltrate the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), a political outfit associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. These alleged plans aim to influence the political landscape in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election, with reports suggesting UDA's strategy involves sponsoring candidates aligned with the government in the Mt Kenya region.
Political Maneuvering in Mt Kenya
According to Cherargei, UDA is determined to maintain its stronghold in Mt Kenya by clandestinely supporting certain candidates in key races, including the forthcoming Kirinyaga gubernatorial contest. The senator claims that despite public allegiance to UDA, some politicians are covertly affiliated with DCP, a move Cherargei suggests is aimed at consolidating UDA's influence and undermining Gachagua's growing political base.
Cherargei criticized what he described as a 'masquerade' by some politicians who publicly claim loyalty to UDA while secretly backing DCP candidates. He expressed concern that such tactics could lead to electoral manipulation and questioned the integrity of the political process, especially with upcoming races that are crucial for the region’s political future.
He further alleged that UDA's influence extends beyond party loyalty, pointing to recent political activities and campaigns in regions like Kirinyaga and Murang’a. Cherargei emphasized the importance of transparent and fair electoral practices to ensure genuine representation and prevent covert political maneuvering that could distort democratic processes.
This controversy unfolds amidst broader political realignments in Mt Kenya, where some elected officials have distanced themselves from UDA, favoring Gachagua’s newly formed party. The accusations add a layer of tension to the region's dynamic politics, reflecting the intense rivalry and strategic recalibrations ahead of the 2027 elections.
