From Classroom to Courtroom: The Inspiring Journey of Kenyan Lawyer Danstan Omari

How an Untrained Teacher Defied the Odds to Become One of Kenya’s Most Sought-After Lawyers

Danstan Omari is a prominent Kenyan lawyer and lecturer whose story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering ambition. From humble beginnings as an untrained teacher to becoming one of the most sought-after legal minds in Kenya, Omari’s journey is a testament to hard work and perseverance.

Early Life and Age

Danstan Omari was born on 6th December 1964 in Nyabite village, Nyamira County, to the late Elkana Mogaka and Milka Kemunto Mogaka. Growing up in a modest household, he attended Nyamira Primary School, where he scored 19 out of 36 points in his national examination, and later joined Ruiru Secondary School in 1978, achieving Division 3.

Seeking better academic opportunities, Omari repeated a year and moved to Kiabonyoru High School, where he studied alongside Interior CS Fred Matiang’i. He excelled, scoring Division 2, before advancing to Muguga High School for his A-levels. His academic dedication eventually earned him a place at Kenyatta University for a Bachelor of Education, though his true passion lay in law. He graduated in 1990.

Academic Journey in Law

Driven by his ambition to practice law, Omari pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Law in 2008 and enrolled at Kenya School of Law in 2009. After six months, he furthered his studies with a Master of Law at the University of Nairobi, including a three-month program in Japan on juvenile delinquency. He completed his Master’s degree on 2nd December 2011, solidifying his credentials as a legal expert.

Career: From Teacher to Legal Expert

Omari began his career in 1986 as an untrained teacher in South Mugirango. He later taught at Kiabonyoru High School and joined the National Youth Service in 1987 for a three-month training before university.

After graduating, he faced career challenges, including refusing a teaching post in Bomet and enduring interdiction from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). During this period, Omari explored opportunities in management, working as a hotel and club manager in Nairobi and Nyeri.

After winning his TSC case, he reinvested his earnings to purchase four matatus and resumed teaching at South Mugirango and later Muthurwa Secondary School. In 2004, he committed fully to his legal dreams, investing almost all his savings to study law, with his wife supporting him financially.

Upon completion, he worked as a children’s officer in Kirinyaga before being admitted as an advocate on 4th November 2011. He then joined Musyoki Mogaka and Company Advocates and later became a law lecturer at Catholic University, where he continues to influence young legal minds.

Personal Life and Marriage

Danstan Omari is married to Pamela, whom he met near Kiabonyoru High School. He has been instrumental in supporting her education, funding both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, apart from her first-semester fees. Their story reflects a partnership built on mutual support, love, and shared ambition.
