Victor Maina: From Hawker to Billionaire – The Business Empire Behind Mathai Supermarkets

How Victor Maina Built a Diverse Business Empire from Humble Beginnings

Victor Maina, the founder of the renowned Mathai Supermarket chain, is one of Kenya’s most remarkable self-made businessmen. Based in Thika, Maina has grown his wealth through a diverse portfolio of ventures, spanning retail, real estate, entertainment, construction, and quarries in Juja.

Humble Beginnings

Maina’s journey to success started in the bustling streets of Nairobi. He began as a hawker in Marikiti Market, later moving to Muthurwa and other parts of the city. Reflecting on his early struggles, Maina says:

"I was a hawker here in Marikiti then moved to Muthurwa and other parts of the city. I am not saying this in jest, but to encourage you to put your best foot forward."

Mathai Supermarket Chain

The Mathai Supermarket chain is now a household name in Kenya, with multiple outlets in Nairobi, Thika, Embu, Meru, Karatina, and Nyeri. The chain has become a key player in the retail sector, catering to a wide range of customers.

Expanding Beyond Retail

Victor Maina’s entrepreneurial reach extends beyond supermarkets:

Entertainment & Hospitality: He owns Klub Image Hotel in Thika, where rooms feature balconies, flat-screen TVs, and continental breakfast. Additionally, Klub Liquid Cash, also in Thika, is a popular entertainment hub with guest accommodations.

Wholesale Mall in OTC: Maina has invested in wholesale retail, expanding his business footprint further.

Real Estate & Land: Maina owns a 17-acre piece of land in Thika, which has been embroiled in a high-profile court dispute. Originally sold to him in 2008 for KES 9 million by Gatundu parliamentary aspirant Kariuki Muiruri, the land’s ownership has been contested, with Maina claiming he completed payment. The property is now valued at approximately KES 300 million.

From hawking in Nairobi’s busy markets to owning a multi-sector business empire, Victor Maina’s story is a testament to determination, vision, and entrepreneurial grit.
