Dr Austin Omondi, popularly known as Japrado, is a rising star in Kenya’s medical and humanitarian landscape. Recognized among the Top 100 Kenyans in 2024 and honored as the Star Person of the Year 2024, Omondi is making a lasting impact through his work both in hospitals and communities.
Omondi’s journey began in Mombasa, where he sat for his KCPE at High Gate Academy in 2008, scoring an impressive 422 marks, a performance that earned him admission to the prestigious Alliance High School.
Founder of Medics for Kenya: Driving Change Through Volunteering
Omondi is the visionary founder of Medics for Kenya, a volunteer-driven organization that has become a beacon of hope in medical humanitarian work. The group has organized first aid services, blood donation drives, and medical camps across the country, helping thousands in need.
During the 2024 Generation Democracy (Gen D) demonstrations, Omondi coordinated over 100 medics to set up a makeshift clinic at Jamia Mosque, providing triage, first aid, and referrals for injured protesters. His dedication to serving communities has earned him admiration nationwide.
A Brave Stand Comes With Risks
Omondi’s humanitarian work has not been without challenges. In June 2024, while conducting a blood donation drive at Sikh Union, he was abducted by unknown individuals. He shared the shocking experience on social media, stating,
“I was this afternoon abducted by the Police incommunicado while conducting a blood donation drive at the Sikh Union.”
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, with KMPDU, LSK, and KMA demanding his immediate release. The doctors’ union even threatened to go on strike. Fortunately, Omondi was eventually released, highlighting the risks faced by medical professionals who serve fearlessly in volatile situations.
