NAIROBI, Kenya – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the planned Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit (NMPU) will serve as a model for similar specialised police formations in other major cities across Kenya once it is fully established and operational.

Murkomen said the government is moving forward with plans to operationalise the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit as part of broader efforts to strengthen urban security and improve law enforcement in rapidly growing metropolitan areas. According to the Cabinet Secretary, the initiative is aimed at addressing emerging security threats, enhancing public order, and improving coordination among security agencies.

Benchmarking Global Policing Models

The announcement comes as Murkomen and a delegation of senior government officials continue a benchmarking mission in the United States, where they held discussions with officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD).

During the visit, the Kenyan delegation studied various aspects of metropolitan policing, including intelligence-led operations, community policing, emergency response coordination, crime prevention strategies, and the integration of technology into law enforcement. Murkomen noted that lessons learned from the NYPD would help shape the structure and operations of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.

Technology at the Centre of Operations

The Interior CS said the new unit will embrace technology-driven policing to improve crime detection and response. Areas of focus include surveillance systems, data analytics, intelligence gathering, and enhanced coordination among security agencies.

According to Murkomen, Nairobi's position as East Africa's leading commercial and diplomatic hub requires a modern security framework capable of responding to increasingly complex urban challenges. Officials say the NMPU will draw from international best practices while adapting them to Kenya's security environment.

Expansion to Other Cities

Murkomen indicated that once the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is fully operational and its effectiveness assessed, the model will be replicated in other major urban centres across the country.

The proposed expansion is expected to strengthen urban policing in cities experiencing rapid population growth, increased economic activity, and evolving security threats. The government believes specialised metropolitan policing units will enhance public safety, improve emergency response capabilities, and support the protection of critical infrastructure.

Part of Wider Security Reforms

The establishment of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit forms part of ongoing security reforms initiated by the national government. President William Ruto previously directed the Ministry of Interior to develop a framework for the specialised unit, citing the need for improved security coordination in the capital city and its surrounding metropolitan areas.

Government officials maintain that the initiative will contribute to a more professional, modern and responsive police service capable of addressing the demands of Kenya's growing urban centres.
