Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a new ceasefire framework aimed at ending months of cross-border hostilities, following high-level negotiations facilitated by the United States in Washington. The agreement, announced by the U.S. State Department, is contingent upon a complete cessation of attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement and the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from areas south of the Litani River.

The deal comes amid continued violence along the Israel-Lebanon border despite previous ceasefire efforts. Both countries expressed support for measures designed to restore stability and reduce the risk of further escalation.

Security Zones to Be Established

As part of the agreement, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to advance the creation of pilot security zones in southern Lebanon. These areas will be placed under the exclusive control of the Lebanese Armed Forces, with the aim of preventing the presence of non-state armed groups.According to the joint statement, the move is intended to strengthen Lebanese state authority and create conditions for a more comprehensive peace and security arrangement in the future.

U.S. Plays Key Mediation Role
The agreement follows two days of intensive negotiations involving representatives from Israel, Lebanon and the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other American officials played a central role in facilitating the talks, which sought to reduce tensions that have intensified in recent months.
The United States said it would continue supporting dialogue between the two countries and assist efforts to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Challenges Remain
Despite the announcement, questions remain about the implementation of the ceasefire. Previous agreements have struggled to hold, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Reports of rocket launches and military strikes have continued even as diplomatic efforts have progressed.
It is also unclear whether Hezbollah will fully comply with all conditions outlined in the agreement, although earlier reports indicated the group had shown willingness to support a broader cessation of hostilities.

Further Talks Planned
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to continue direct political and security discussions later this month as part of efforts to resolve outstanding issues and work toward a broader peace arrangement. The next round of negotiations is expected to take place during the week of June 22.
