Maranda High School in Siaya County has resumed classes following an indefinite closure caused by student unrest. The school administration has implemented strict measures to prevent future disturbances, including phased re-entry and specific requirements for students and parents.
Reopening Under Strict Conditions
The school will reopen this weekend for Form Four students, with re-admission occurring in stages on June 5 and June 6, 2026. All students must arrive by 10:00 am, accompanied by a parent or guardian. These measures aim to restore order and accountability following recent disturbances that disrupted academic activities.
Re-entry is contingent upon parents settling all outstanding school fees and paying a mandatory damage restitution fee of Ksh.2,695 per student. This initiative is part of the school's efforts to ensure discipline and financial compliance among students' families.
The administration has also announced a recovery package for 192 Form Four students residing in the "Owino B" dormitory, which was extensively damaged during the riots. Affected students will be provided with essential supplies, including uniforms, shoes, mattresses, blankets, and bedsheets. Parents are only required to supply personal hygiene items and replacement metal boxes if theirs were destroyed.
This phased and conditional reopening aims to balance restoring normalcy and maintaining strict discipline to prevent future unrest, reflecting the school’s commitment to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for its students.
