Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has taken decisive action following the arrest of Patrick Akivaga Analo, the County Chief Officer for Urban Planning, by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). The governor has suspended Analo and appointed Dominic Mutegi as the acting officer as investigations continue.
Reforming Urban Planning Oversight in Nairobi
Sakaja's administration is putting a new focus on transparency in urban development by reconstituting the Urban Planning Technical Committee. This committee, responsible for processing development approvals, is being renewed with nominations from key professional bodies and agencies, including the Civil Aviation Authority, among others. The inclusion of an EACC liaison officer is also part of the effort to strengthen oversight and ensure public accountability.
Pending the reorganization, all development approval processes in Nairobi are temporarily suspended. The governor has directed that urgent cases be handled by the County Executive Committee Member for Built Environment and Urban Planning, Patrick Mbogo, under the provisions of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act. This move aims to prevent further irregularities while reform efforts are underway.
Sakaja’s actions come amidst a broader push for integrity and efficiency in Nairobi’s governance structures. By overhauling the urban planning processes, the governor aims to restore public confidence and ensure that development projects comply with legal and ethical standards.
These reforms are part of a strategic approach to address corruption concerns and improve urban management in Nairobi. The ongoing investigations and subsequent restructuring signify the government's commitment to uphold good governance principles in the face of challenges.
