Thirty-one suspects arrested during protests at an Ebola site in Laikipia have been released on cash bail, prompting debates on public safety and civil rights.
Protests at the Ebola Site and Legal Proceedings
The protesters were granted bail of Ksh.10,000 each after being charged with obstructing motor vehicles unlawfully. They were detained at Nanyuki GK prison, with court documents indicating that they allegedly barricaded roads using stones, logs, and burning tyres, disrupting traffic and endangering road users.
Seventeen of the accused pleaded guilty and were fined Ksh.10,000 or faced a one-month prison sentence in default. The remaining fourteen pleaded not guilty and were released on bail of Ksh.20,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh.50,000 with a surety.
The incident has reignited discussions on how authorities handle public dissent and the balance between security and civil liberties in the region.
